The Girlie and I went out mushrooming on Sunday…

We didn’t expect much but…

The Girlie did find a nice Cep…

Of course, I (mushrooming expert of Brittany, no less), found nothing at all!

I have got 2 (maybe 3, fingers crossed) new clients but, whenever we get a chance, the Girlie and I have been going mushrooming.

For intimate details you’ll need to take a look at www.MushroomDiary.com but these photos are just an appetiser to show you the sort of mushrooms we are finding.

These are actually the less wonderful or the Ceps that we picked on Saturday!

The really perfect ones got sliced and frozen….

Or put into the fridge for later on.

These were sliced and chopped…..

I fried some lardons and onions and then added to the mushrooms to sweat down.

Then I added some water and chicken stock to make the most wonderful sauce you can imagine!

We’ve had it two days in a row and the leftovers are…

Going to be turned into soup tomorrow!

I’m not the fastest of drivers at the best of time but in the Autumn I seem to slow right down.

But then, I’m not the only one….

Many of the locals are, like me, not watching the road but, rather, watching the sides of the road…

It’s all to do with mushrooms, you see!

And, as long as I don’t get too distracted and drive into a ditch….

Or another, equally distracted, driver…

I may just survive to eat all of these lovely mushrooms!

If you are route planning this Autumn, I’d avoid my little part of south-west Brittany!

Well, Gertie seems to have been at it again!

We had some friends, Martin and Carolyn, round for a little mushrooming foray and Carolyn noticed something a bit strange behind the lilies!

It appear that Gerties had hidden 13 of her eggy peggies there…

Well, it is just outside the kitchen!

Cep omelette anyone?

Oh, by the way – the full basket was Martin and Carolyn’s; the almost empty one was mine!

I just wish I knew what I had to do… to get the chickies to lay in the lovely nesting box that I built for them!

I do keep telling them that it’s the poshest nesting box in Brittany but they take absolutely no notice at all of me!

The Girlie was rather keen to weigh the mushrooms that we picked on Saturday…

They came in at 1,5 kilos!

Not bad for a few hours work!

Not that wandering round the beautiful Breton countryside can really be called work…

In some ways this post is really a family post…

I’m hoping my Father sees these photos…

We did email the photos of last week’s haul and he threatened to set the RSPCA on us!

In this case, RSPCA stands for Royal Society for the Protection of the Confirmed Aged!

Also, I have a brother who is Head Chef of the Forest Lodge Hotel in the heart of Sherwood Forest…

I do hope he’s going to be suitably jealous as well…

I understand these sort of mushrooms are rather expensive in England?

I’m not saying that we’ve got mountains of mushrooms but…

There do seem to be rather a lot in the kitchen, waiting to be eaten or preserved.

When Dave and Marnie (and daughter Holly), came round for dinner on Saturday I thought it would be nice to try a Salade des Ceps as a starter.

I started off by making a vinaigrette and massaging it into the sliced ceps.

I then put those ceps in the fridge to marinate for a couple of hours.

The salad was a simple one of Mâche, tomatoes and onions.

I couldn’t resist the temptation of putting a nasturtium flower in each bowl (I mean, how tarty is that?) and, for that, I heartily apologise.

Just before serving, I added the sliced ceps to each bowl of salad, faffed around with them a bit, sprinkled over some rock salt and ground pepper and dressed the lot in the left over vinaigrette.

On reflection I think that I was a bit stingy with the ceps – next time, I’ll slice them thicker and might try very quickly heating them with some lardons at the last moment.

Thus, am stuck indoors.

Luckily, the postman has just been – with a present – The Encyclopedia of Fungi. Thank you Briony!

I am hoping that the weather is better tomorrow so that, armed with the new reference, I can go searching for some Pleurotus Ostreatus (Oyster mushrooms to you). There were some to the east of the forest about this time last year.

And, who knows, I might even see a baby deer!
